Consumers praise the VideoSpin software for its simplicity in allowing them to quickly create fun videos and share them with friends and family, via email or the Web. Unlike many other free video editing software packages, VideoSpin does not require users to connect to the Web to create videos.
Users can simply download the application once and edit their work offline. Further, the VideoSpin software doesn’t impose any file size limitations – an important consideration for consumers editing longer videos or videos taken on higher-resolution devices.
And then, after it's installed, you find out the various included codecs are a 15-day trial: SpinPack: SpinPack Encoders and Decoders Price: $ 14.99. MP3 Audio: ideal audio for portable players. MPEG-1: ideal for VideoCDs.
MPEG-2: offers DVD-quality results. MPEG-4/DIvX: great quality in small files for the web, portable devices such as iPod and Sony PSP, cell phones, etc. Dolby Digital 2 Channel Audio: needed to create DVD’s and movies on your iPod and PSP. AMR Audio: great audio quality for mobile devices. But the wording could have been a little more diplomatic I agree on that. But lets face it. In 2009 video editing is in the financial reach of everybody that can afford a computer.
If these developments will in the end result in 'us' focusing more on the creative qualities of the job then the technical then that is only good. Maybe some feel avid is degrading the job 'video editor' here. I see it more in the light of avid making this editing world accessible for everybody.
If there is more talent out there, please join the club. I started out with pushing a red button on a sony bve-2000 and some beta's and look where it got me. If everybody that has a pc and internet has a chance to do the same by making his first desolve in videospin then that's only good. My few cents worth. We all know that technology is levelling the playing fields and that many more people will (if they choose) be able to do things that were considered specialist a few years ago when the barriers to entry were costly.
There are many examples; Full feature animated films are created on Blender anyone can do it if they have the inclination. Freeware development tools cause software companies nightmares but have opened up software development to a huge audience of good developers out there (and hackers) And what about Idols giving relative nobodies a shot at fame and fortune? But the one comment that I read somewhere (wish I could remember the author so I could credit them with the comment, but suffice to say it is not from me - pity): Video editing will become more like writing, that is everybody will be able to do it, but some will be better than others and some will make a living from it. (Like with writing: Story tellers, journalists, non-fiction writers etc).
Yes we can all write, we dont need to understand inkflows, ball tensions and font creation etc. Some of use writing to assist us in our chosen career, but we dont make a living from being able to write. As I write this there a lot of coutner arguments to this jumping around in my head, but I think it best explains the inexorable march of progress. (Imagine how the scribes felt when the printing press was invented!).
The big thing is that editing is way more time consuming than other pastimes and over time the distinction between people wanting to edit and people who can but dont want to will clear and like any other activity people will be prepared to pay others to do it for them. Just like in the past. But the tools will be available and we need to understand that tools will become more sophisticated and we cannot hide behind the tools or the cost of the investment, we have to stand by our ability to edit creatively and efficiently.
